Imagine 12 million Canadians getting active on one day in a celebration of exercise and movement. This is what Fitness Industry Council of Canada (FIC) is ambitiously doing – inviting millions of Canadians to their facilities on Saturday, June 3rd to exercise, try a class, talk to a fitness professional and join a National Fitness Party.
“We don’t need a reason to celebrate the power of physical activity for our physical and mental health, but National Health and Fitness Day gives us a fantastic one,” says Sara Hodson, President of Fitness Industry Council of Canada. “And we are using this opportunity to talk about the importance of social health, connection and accountability in getting your 150 minutes of exercise.”
National Health and Fitness Day began in 2010, riding on the high energy of the Vancouver Olympics to make Canada the fittest country in the world. It was unanimously passed in the Senate in 2014, and is honored on the first Saturday in June each year. Fitness Industry Council of Canada is inviting Canadians to their facilities for free, and hosting special events all across the country.
“The gym where you come to get healthy – our facilities are filled with experts, trained professionals, inspiring fitness coaches and communities of Canadians who want to be physically and mentally stronger,” says Gabriel Hardy, Executive Director of Fitness Industry Council of Canada. “On National Health and Fitness Day we are inviting Canadians to remember what it is like to feel good again.”
The number one trend in the world is functional movement – and every piece of data connects physical activity, gyms and improved mental and physical health. “National Health and Fitness Day is our open invitation to Canadians to come check out the gym, where YOUR health is our BUSINESS! Come see what you have been missing,” says Hardy.
